Crab Rangoon is a classic and irresistible appetizer featuring crispy wonton wrappers filled with a creamy and savory mixture of cream cheese and imitation crab meat. Perfectly fried to golden perfection, these bite-sized treats are a favorite at parties and gatherings, served alongside a tangy dipping sauce for an extra burst of flavor.
Ingredients
Filling
- 8 ounces imitation crab meat, chopped
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- 1 large clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Assembly
- 12 wonton wrappers
- 1 large egg, beaten (for sealing)
For Frying
- Deep frying oil (enough for deep frying at 350°F)
Instructions
- Prepare the crab meat: Chop the imitation crab meat into small pieces to ensure it mixes well with the other ingredients and creates a smooth filling.
- Make the filling: In a bowl, combine the chopped crab meat, cream cheese, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated, producing a creamy and flavorful mixture.
- Assemble the wontons: Place one wonton wrapper flat on your workspace. Spoon approximately 1 teaspoon of the crab and cream cheese filling into the center of the wrapper.
- Seal the wontons: Lightly brush the edges of the wonton wrapper with the beaten egg. Fold the wrapper by bringing the corners together to form a four-cornered star shape, ensuring no air is trapped inside to prevent bursting during frying. Press the edges firmly to seal.
- Heat the oil: Heat deep frying oil in a pot or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C), ensuring the oil is hot enough for crisp frying.
- Fry the Crab Rangoon: Carefully place the assembled wontons into the hot oil and fry for 1 to 2 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to turn them if needed for even cooking.
- Drain and serve: Remove the fried Crab Rangoons from the oil, drain on paper towels to remove excess oil, and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Make sure there is no air trapped inside the wontons to prevent them from bursting while frying.
- Use fresh oil heated to the right temperature for crispy and non-greasy Crab Rangoon.
- You can substitute imitation crab meat with fresh crab meat for a more authentic flavor, but it may be more delicate to handle.
- Serve warm with sweet and sour sauce, soy sauce, or a spicy mayo for dipping.
- If you want to prepare ahead, assemble the wontons and freeze them on a tray before frying.
