Ingredients
Homemade Chai Concentrate:
- 2 cups water
- 2 black tea bags (e.g., English breakfast) OR 4 grams loose-leaf black tea
- 2 whole cloves or 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
- 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or honey
Chai Latte:
- 1/2 cup homemade chai tea concentrate (from above)
- 3/4 cup whole milk or dairy-free milk (coconut, cashew, almond, or oat milk)
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup or honey
- Pinch of ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Prepare Spice Infusion: In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups water with the cloves, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, and allspice. Bring to a boil, whisking to evenly distribute the spices. Once boiling, turn off the heat and steep for 5 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Add Tea and Sweetener: Return the saucepan to the stove and add the black tea bags (or loose-leaf tea) and 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or honey. Bring to a gentle boil again to produce a hot liquid for steeping. Then turn off the heat and steep the tea for another 5 minutes to extract robust tea flavor.
- Strain and Reserve Concentrate: Remove the tea bags and strain the chai concentrate through a fine mesh sieve into a clean container to remove the spices and tea leaves. Reserve 1/2 cup of this concentrated chai to make the latte immediately, and store any remaining concentrate in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
- Make the Chai Latte: In a serving cup, combine 1/2 cup of homemade chai concentrate with 3/4 cup of your preferred milk. Stir in 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or honey and add a pinch of ground cinnamon. For a frothy texture, use an immersion blender or a fork to froth the milk before or after mixing.
Notes
- You can adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of maple syrup or honey.
- Store leftover chai concentrate refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 2 weeks.
- Experiment with different milk alternatives like oat or almond milk for dairy-free options.
- For a stronger chai flavor, steep the spices and tea for longer before straining.
- Use freshly ground spices for the best aroma and taste.
