Description

This Italian Herbs and Cheese Bread is a delicious homemade loaf bursting with classic Italian flavors and a cheesy blend of mozzarella and Parmesan. Featuring a crispy golden crust and a soft, flavorful interior, this bread makes a perfect accompaniment to pasta dishes, soups, or can be enjoyed as a savory snack on its own.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons dried Italian herbs (basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Wet Ingredients

  • 1¾ cups warm water (about 110°F)

Yeast

  • 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

Cheese

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Other

  • Extra flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Yeast Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Mix Ingredients: Add the all-purpose flour, salt, dried Italian herbs, shredded mozzarella, and grated Parmesan to the yeast mixture. Mix together until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it for 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Add a small amount of flour if the dough is too sticky, but avoid adding too much to keep the bread soft.
  4. Proof the Dough: Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape the Dough: Once risen, punch down the dough to release the air. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan or on a baking sheet.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the shaped dough loosely with a towel and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes until it puffs up slightly.
  7. Bake the Bread: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy the flavorful bread fresh or toasted.

Notes

  • Use warm water around 110°F to properly activate the yeast.
  • Do not add too much flour during kneading to maintain a soft texture.
  • Ensure the dough doubles in size during the first proof for a fluffy loaf.
  • You can substitute dried herbs with fresh herbs, but reduce quantity to avoid overpowering flavor.
  • Store leftover bread in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
