Description

Smoky Masala Chai is a flavorful and aromatic Indian spiced tea that combines the rich smokiness of black tea with warming spices like cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, black peppercorns, and an optional star anise. Sweetened with brown sugar and enriched with creamy milk, this comforting warm beverage is ideal for cozy moments or energizing your mornings with its vibrant, spicy aroma and smooth texture.

Ingredients

Tea Base

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tsp loose-leaf smoky black tea, or 2 tea bags (such as Lapsang Souchong or Harney & Sons Black Cask Bourbon Tea)
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)

Spices

  • 4–5 black peppercorns
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 3 green cardamom pods, slightly crushed
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise (optional)

Sweetener

  • 1–2 tablespoons brown sugar (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the spices: Slightly crush the cardamom pods to release their flavor and gather all whole spices including black peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon stick, and star anise if using.
  2. Boil water with spices: In a saucepan, add 2 cups of water along with all the prepared spices. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to simmer for about 5 minutes to infuse the water with the spice flavors.
  3. Add tea leaves: Add the loose-leaf smoky black tea or tea bags into the simmering spiced water. Continue simmering for another 3-5 minutes for a strong, smoky brew.
  4. Add milk and sweetener: Pour in 1 cup of milk and 1-2 tablespoons of brown sugar, stirring well. Allow the mixture to heat through and begin to gently boil, then reduce heat.
  5. Simmer and strain: Let the chai simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes to meld the flavors fully. Then strain the mixture through a fine sieve or tea strainer into cups, removing the tea leaves and spices.
  6. Serve hot: Pour the strained smoky masala chai into mugs and enjoy immediately for the best flavor and warmth.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less brown sugar according to your preference.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute milk with almond, soy, or oat milk.
  • Star anise is optional but adds a lovely subtle licorice note to the chai.
  • Using a smoky tea like Lapsang Souchong is key to achieving the signature smoky flavor of this masala chai.
  • Simmering spices longer intensifies flavor but avoid over-boiling milk to prevent curdling.
